As previously, the storyline initiates with an undisclosed cadaver, followed by a journey back in time to lay the groundwork for a possible murder — or perhaps something else entirely — as visitors make their grand entrance at their luxurious resort hotel, arriving via sea.

The recently produced season of this show was filmed in Thailand, where the Four Seasons Koh Samui stood in for the central resort. Previous episodes were set in Maui and Sicily. This version of White Lotus presents a luxurious wellness retreat that focuses on mental and physical well-being, with electronic devices being kept secure for those opting in — although not everyone chooses to participate. However, there are still bars, restaurants, and entertainment available.
Creator, writer, and director Mike White delves into spiritual themes in this series, similar to his exploration of sexual topics in the past. Nevertheless, sexual content is present, but it intertwines with the spiritual, and vice versa. Essentially, it can be seen as a follow-up to «Enlightened,» a 2011 HBO series created by White and starring Laura Dern. The story revolves around a businesswoman who undergoes a transformation following a nervous breakdown at a tropical spa.
This is a more refined, individualized version of a multi-plot, emotional drama like MGM’s 1932 «Grand Hotel» (where Greta Garbo famously said, «I want to be alone») and adaptations of Arthur Hailey novels from the mid-century such as «Airport» and «Hotel»; the latter was titled «Arthur Hailey’s Hotel» for five television seasons in the 1980s. In simpler terms, it’s a modernized, personalized take on stories involving multiple characters and strong emotions, similar to those seen in classic films like «Grand Hotel» and TV shows based on Arthur Hailey books.
As the primary characters step ashore at the resort, they’re warmly welcomed by the appropriate staff members such as Fabian, the hotel manager (portrayed by Christian Friedel), and Sritala Hollinger, the co-owner (played by Lek Patravadi), a renowned figure from the singing and film industry and an innovator in wellness. Although it’s costly, not every guest appears content with their stay.
The Ratliff family hails from North Carolina, with father Timothy (Jason Isaacs) working in finance, mother Victoria (Parker Posey), and children Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), a self-absorbed young man who works for his dad; college senior Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook), who intends to interview a Buddhist monk for her thesis but considers the hotel as a playground for wealthy, artsy folk from Malibu in their athletic clothing; and Lochlan (Sam Nivola), a late-developing high school senior. Their «house supervisor» — each group has one — is Pam (Morgana O’Reilly).

Their bond, evidently strong, could be described as an excess of affection for each other. Guiding them is Valentin, a muscular Russian with tattoos, who makes his grand entrance without a shirt on.
In my perspective, I find myself drawn to the captivating dynamics of this quartet. There’s Rick, whose persona exudes an allure reminiscent of cigarettes, casual floral attire, and a somewhat perspiring aura. By his side is Chelsea, a vibrant, youthful companion who promises to help him rediscover his happiness, come what may. Their guiding figure is Mook, brilliantly portrayed by the Thai pop sensation Lalisa Manoban, or better known as Lisa from Blackpink, making her debut in acting. Mook conducts wellness workshops during the day, entertains at night, and unknowingly sparks a crush in Gaitok, a kind-hearted, bumbling security guard.
In this show’s typical fashion, the guests are often wealthy white individuals, serving as a backdrop to compare with many of the staff members. However, Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), who reprises her role as the spa manager from Season 1 at The White Lotus in Maui, is neither a guest nor a member of the staff, but rather their counterpart. She has returned this season and interacts with Pornchai (Dom Hetrakul), reminiscent of a professional exchange program. It’s possible she recognizes someone from last season, as one might expect.
At first glance, this narrative seems reminiscent of tales about spiritually disillusioned Westerners in an ethereal Eastern setting, similar to «Lost Horizon» and «The Razor’s Edge.» However, it’s essential to note that self-discovery or enlightenment is not explicitly offered as an option for the characters, except perhaps for Piper. Yet, a philosophical therapist named Amrita (played by Sri Lankan actress Shalini Peiris) expresses her desire to assist in their personal growth.

It presents life-affirming or at least life-accepting choices, fosters a degree of understanding among characters, reunites lovers, and often sees goodness prevail. The participants in the story may evolve, but the setting remains constant.
