9. Талли (2018)
Drew
In 2018, I had the pleasure of watching «Tully,» a captivating movie directed by the talented Jason Reitman. The film showcases Charlize Theron in the role of Marlo, a woman grappling with an unexpected third pregnancy alongside her husband, Drew. The screenplay, penned by Diablo Cody for their third collaboration with Reitman, takes an intriguing turn as it delves into Marlo’s unique bond with her night nanny, Tully, portrayed brilliantly by Mackenzie Davis.
While the film primarily focuses on Marlo and Tully’s relationship, Drew’s character plays a significant role in the narrative. He is the husband who strives to comprehend his wife’s experiences, even though he sometimes falls short. This makes him an essential part of the story as we witness his efforts to empathize with Marlo during their challenging journey together.
The movie «Tully» received widespread acclaim, earning an impressive 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics particularly admired Charlize Theron’s acting and appreciated the script’s exploration of the challenges of motherhood and postpartum mental health. Theron was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Actress — Motion Picture Comedy or Musical category, while both Theron and Mackenzie Davis received nominations from the Hollywood Critics Association Awards.
8. The Flash (2023)
Henry Allen
In an unexpected turn of events, Ron Livingston became a member of the DC Universe in 2023. In the series The Flash, he portrays Henry Allen, the father of Barry Allen. This casting decision was surprising because it came after Billy Crudup had originally played the role of Henry in Justice League. Unfortunately, Crudup had to withdraw from the role due to scheduling conflicts with his TV show, The Morning Show. Livingston subsequently stepped into the role, playing a significant part as Flash worked tirelessly to exonerate him for the murder of his mother.
Despite having several positive aspects, The Flash faced some harsh critiques. The return of Michael Keaton as Batman, which was a delight for fans since his last portrayal in 1989 and 1992, was undeniably exciting. However, the reappearance of General Zod was enjoyable too, but the CGI and complexities surrounding time travel might have deterred casual viewers. To add to that, the movie’s release came after the DCU announced a reboot, which left many fans indifferent towards this film. Consequently, it garnered a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes due to preserving the essence of the character.
7. A Million Little Things (2018-2023)
Jonathan Dixon
In my humble opinion as a movie reviewer, the captivating ABC drama series «A Million Little Things» was an absolute network hit, with Ron Livingston bringing a compelling performance to the table. Interestingly enough, his character, Jon Dixon — a successful entrepreneur who takes his own life — doesn’t appear in the main narrative of the show. Instead, we follow a close-knit group of friends whose lives are turned upside down when one of them tragically commits suicide, leaving everyone else questioning their own existence and understanding of reality.
In the initial season, Livingston served as a primary character, primarily via flashbacks, but transitioned into a recurring guest character in the second, third, and fifth seasons. Despite receiving a mixed response from critics (earning an overall 53% score for the first season), the audience showed enthusiasm, rating it with a 85% fresh score. The main criticisms centered around the series being overly somber, burdened by its gloomy narrative and heavy themes that seldom allowed viewers moments of respite.
6. Boardwalk Empire (2013)
Roy Phillips
Ron Livingston became a part of the cast for Boardwalk Empire during its fourth season. This historical crime drama centers around Nucky Thompson, portrayed by Steve Buscemi, who is a significant political figure from the Prohibition era in the 1920s. Over the course of five seasons, Nucky amasses power in Atlantic City while interacting with gangsters, politicians, and real-life historical figures. Livingston takes on the role of Roy Phillips, who presents himself as an executive for a Piggly Wiggly market chain, but secretly works at a detective agency.
In the premiere of the fourth season, I made my debut and found myself captivated by Gillian, a long-standing friend of Nucky’s and the mother of Jimmy. I wanted her to confess to driving Roger McAllister, hoping to catch her for the crime. Yet, as our relationship deepened, I found myself drawn to her, helping her overcome her drug addiction. As time passed, I found myself torn between my duty and my feelings, but eventually, I managed to get her to admit to the crime and had her arrested and imprisoned.
5. Loudermilk (2017-2020)
Sam Loudermilk
In the year 2017, Ron Livingston portrayed Sam Loudermilk, a former alcoholic, in the comedy-drama series called «Loudermilk». This character manages his own substance abuse support group in Seattle and offers aid to those seeking recovery. However, when the priest of the church where he conducts meetings asks him to assist a church member’s daughter in overcoming her addiction, he finds it challenging due to his difficulties forming meaningful connections with others. The show chronicles Loudermilk’s journey as well as that of Claire (Anja Savcic), as they both strive to make progress.
This show, titled «Loudermilk,» centers around Loudermilk, Claire, and other members of their support group, all grappling with their personal issues that hinder their path to healing. The series has received acclaim for its witty humor and stellar acting, boasting a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Spanning three seasons, the show came to an end when the Audience Network discontinued its streaming service. However, there’s optimism that a fourth season may soon pick up where it left off, continuing the narrative.
4. The Conjuring (2013)
Roger Perron
The series known as «The Conjuring Universe» started with the release of its namesake movie in 2013. In this film, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga take on the roles of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Their first assignment is to look into a farmhouse in Rhode Island, which is suspected to be inhabited by a spirit that may have possessed its occupants. The family living there consists of Roger, Carolyn Perron, and their five daughters. It is at this farmhouse where strange occurrences start happening. Upon arrival, the Warrens discern that a malicious entity haunts the property.
In this rephrased version:
Ron Livingston portrays Rober Perron, the family’s father figure. As one who is deeply concerned about the haunting and dedicated to safeguarding his loved ones, Livingston plays a pivotal role in drawing viewers into the storyline. The movie garnered widespread acclaim from critics, earning an 86% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, it was also a financial triumph, grossing $319.5 million against a production budget of just $20 million. To date, the franchise has amassed more than $2.2 billion in revenue across eight movies.
3. Adaptation (2002)
Marty Bowen
In this rephrased version, the film titled «Adaptation» was a comedy-drama directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman. The movie is loosely inspired by Susan Orlean’s book, «The Orchid Thief.» Meryl Streep portrays Susan Orlean, the author of the novel that Charlie Kaufman is hired to write. Nicolas Cage takes on dual roles: as Kaufman himself, struggling with transforming the novel into a screenplay, and as his twin brother, Donald Kaufman. Lastly, Ron Livingston plays Marty Bowen, the actual founder of Temple Hill Entertainment in real life.
The entire movie functions as a self-reflective depiction, with Cage portraying the real-life screenwriter of Adaptation, who grapples with adapting the script for this specific film. Although Livingston’s character had a minor role, the movie garnered both critical acclaim and modest box office success. Critics lauded it as innovative and complex on Rotten Tomatoes, giving it a 91% fresh rating. Furthermore, it earned four Oscar nominations, with Chris Cooper receiving one of those nods and ultimately winning for his performance.
2. Band Of Brothers (2001)
Lewis Nixon
In the year 2001, actor Ron Livingston was chosen by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks to be a leading star in the HBO miniseries titled «Band of Brothers». This series traced Easy Company’s journey during World War II, particularly their engagements on the Western Front. Spanning over 10 episodes, the story unfolded from their initial training right through to their landing at Normandy and subsequent battles up until the end of the war. Livingston portrayed Captain Lewis Nixon, who was the central character in the ninth episode of the season, titled «Why We Fight».
In Band of Brothers, the character portrayed by Damian Lewis, Nixon, finds himself in despair upon learning that his wife is divorcing him before they even reach Nazi Germany. This emotional turmoil results in his demotion to an operations officer role. Despite his personal struggles, Nixon plays a crucial part in rescuing prisoners from a concentration camp, an event preceding the announced suicide of Adolf Hitler. The series concludes by revealing the fates of both Nixon and Richard Winters (also portrayed by Damian Lewis). Band of Brothers garnered 20 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, winning seven, and Livingston was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.
1. Office Space (1999)
Peter
The movie that made Ron Livingston well-known is Mike Judge’s 1999 film «Office Space.» In this film, Livingston plays the main character Peter Gibbons, a disgruntled and uninspired programmer at Initech, a software company. During a hypnotherapy session, Gibbons is told to become completely relaxed and stop worrying about anything. Unfortunately, his therapist suffers a heart attack and passes away, leaving Gibbons under the suggestion just as his company hires consultants to streamline their business operations.
Remarkably, the consultants seem to favor his unenthusiastic demeanor, and he’s one of the individuals they decide not to let go. The movie, in fact, is a sharp satire of corporate life and getting trapped in the corporate machine. It has grown into one of the most cherished cult favorites in cinema lore. Critics have lauded the film, earning it an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Ron Livingston has crafted a character that he’s continued to portray in various roles since then.
