Following the unveiling of the initial sneak peek for «The Fantastic Four: First Steps,» it seems highly improbable that Marvel Studios could incorporate the romantic relationship between Sue Storm and Namor from the comics into the MCU. In the debut teaser, which premiered on February 4, we were granted our first glimpse of Vanessa Kirby’s portrayal of Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman. I am confident that Kirby will deliver a faithful and impactful interpretation of Sue Storm in live-action, but I fervently hope that one of her comic book narratives is overlooked.

The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, is one of my most eagerly awaited. I’m excited about the prospect of Marvel’s original family joining the MCU, as it opens up possibilities for some fantastic comic book stories to be adapted more authentically. However, there are certain Fantastic Four storylines from the comics that might not translate well into live-action in the MCU, and one in particular I hope Sue Storm stays away from. Fortunately, the teaser for The Fantastic Four: First Steps gives me confidence that this may not happen.
I Can’t Imagine Sue Storm & Namor Falling In Love In The MCU
Sue Storm & Namor Have Something Of A Romance In Marvel Comics
It seems highly unlikely that the film versions of Sue Storm (portrayed by Vanessa Kirby) and Namor (played by Tenoch Huerta) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will delve into the controversial romantic history between these characters, as their relationship was more about intense feelings than deep love in the comics. However, their significant connection has been instrumental in many of the Fantastic Four’s major conflicts since their comic book debut.
In the trailer for «The Fantastic Four: First Steps«, Sue Storm appears fully dedicated to Reed Richards, leading some fans to speculate that she could potentially be pregnant with Franklin Richards. On the other hand, the changes made to Namor in «Black Panther: Wakanda Forever» seem to indicate he’s not interested in a typical human relationship. Given the complex and contentious history between Sue Storm and Namor in Marvel Comics, it might be wiser for Marvel Studios to bypass this aspect of their comic book storyline.
Sue Storm & Namor’s Marvel Comics History Explained
Sue Storm & Namor First Met In 1962’s Fantastic Four #4
In the year 1962, Namor debuted in Marvel Comics’ series, Fantastic Four #4, where he initially crossed paths with Marvel’s founding family and Sue Storm. Almost immediately, a significant bond developed between Namor and Sue Storm, leaving her torn between her emotional pull towards him and the inner turmoil this caused for Reed Richards. Over time, this complex relationship continued to unfold, with Sue Storm maintaining her commitment to Mister Fantastic, despite Namor’s persistent attempts to win her over.
In Marvel Comics, Sue Storm frequently succumbed to her desires only to find herself returning to Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four. In a specific «What If…?» scenario, Spider-Man became a member of the Fantastic Four during their initial escapades, causing Sue Storm to be pushed aside and moving straight into the embrace of Namor the Sub-Mariner. However, Namor’s interference often hindered the progression of Reed Richards and Sue Storm’s relationship, as seen when he abducted Sue before Reed could propose marriage. Nevertheless, the powerful duo of the Fantastic Four eventually ended up together, leaving Namor without a partner.
Parts Of Namor & Sue Storm’s History Are Too Dark For The MCU
Namor Showed His Worst Sides When Sue Storm Was Involved
Marvel Studios might choose to adapt a love triangle plotline involving Sue Storm, Namor, and Reed Richards, as seen in the comics. Nevertheless, I strongly advise against this, given that the relationship between Namor and Sue Storm was far from loving; it was characterized by manipulation, threats, and forceful actions which are highly problematic. While Sue Storm displayed some physical attraction towards Namor, Namor’s infatuation with the Invisible Woman verged on obsession, and he resorted to extreme and reprehensible measures in an attempt to win her affections.
During their shared adventures, Namor consistently treated Sue Storm in a disrespectful manner by objectifying her. This behavior escalated into him acting as a self-centered and arrogant antagonist whenever it concerned Invisible Woman. In their initial encounter in Fantastic Four #4, Namor threatened to annihilate the surface world unless Sue agreed to marry him. On another occasion, he devised a plot to eliminate the other members of the Fantastic Four to compel Sue to join him. Throughout their interactions, Namor repeatedly kidnapped her, mistreated her, and spoke down to her. Given these actions, I believe that any portrayal of their relationship in the MCU should not be adapted due to its inappropriate nature.
Namor’s MCU Changes Make His Sue Storm Connection Unlikely
Tenoch Huerta Debuted As Namor In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
It’s fortunate that Marvel Studios altered numerous aspects of Namor’s character when transforming him into an antihero for the 2022 film, «Black Panther: Wakanda Forever». In this version, Tenoch Huerta’s Namor is deeply rooted in his Mayan heritage as the ruler of the underwater realm, Talokan, which is a significant departure from his Atlantean background in Marvel Comics. Given the depth of Namor’s antipathy towards the surface world within the MCU, it appears quite improbable that he would display romantic feelings for Sue Storm, who debuted in «The Fantastic Four: First Steps».
Tenoch Huerta’s role as Namor for future MCU projects isn’t decided yet, but there’s a chance he might appear alongside Shuri (Letitia Wright) in Black Panther 3. Given that the Fantastic Four and Black Panther share strong ties in Marvel Comics, it’s plausible that Marvel’s First Family could encounter Namor (K’uk’ulkan) if they enter the main MCU continuity during The Fantastic Four: First Steps. However, I hope Marvel Studios steers clear of suggesting a romantic connection between Sue Storm and Namor in the MCU — it feels unnecessary.
