Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller play two expert snipers, Levi and Drasa, who are assigned to watch over a mysterious chasm that could be hiding something terrifying. They’re told not to communicate with each other, but they gradually develop a bond through their limited interactions. When Levi accidentally falls into the abyss, Drasa takes a risky move to save him, jeopardizing both of their lives and careers.

Ebaster conversed with Emma-Taylor and Teller about «The Gorge,» discussing aspects such as Director Derrickson’s unique approach to infusing romance within its chilling plotline, a significant scene involving Drasa that didn’t make it into the final cut, and how they both transformed themselves into lethal assassins for the movie.

«Suspenseful, Tension-Filled Horror Moments. We Knew He Had That.»

Miles Teller Was Really Impressed By Scott Derrickson & His Pitch For The Gorge

In trailers, the chasm referred to as «the door to hell» poses a barrier for Drasa and Levi’s romance. This chasm symbolizes an emotional distance as well as a physical one, filled with unimaginable atrocities. Balancing both aspects can be challenging, but Teller expresses admiration upon meeting Scott, who shared that he was creating this story to explore the theme of love.

As a film enthusiast, hearing Derrickson’s confidence about nailing the project filled me with assurance. «Once he said that,» I thought, «I knew he had what it takes to deliver an exceptional performance.» Teller was already impressed by Derrickson’s previous work, acknowledging his knack for creating suspenseful and horrifying moments. However, the director’s desire to push beyond the familiar only strengthened my conviction in his unique vision.

The Levity & Love In The Gorge Comes From The Characters

Drasa & Levi Still Face Terrifying Obstacles

In addition to the elements of horror and romance, The Gorge is not solely about these aspects. Teller mentions that Taylor-Joy includes a «punk rock dance sequence that was left out during editing.» This scene depicts Drasa baking a cake to Iggy Pop. Such scenes are equally crucial as action and romance in a blockbuster like The Gorge because without intriguing characters, the grandeur will not seem authentic.

Taylor-Joy explains that he has a knack for intuitively creating characters, each one emerging uniquely. For instance, Drasa appears as an individual who is inherently performative and enjoys making jokes. She seems to avoid dwelling in heaviness for extended periods. It’s through this shared characteristic that Levi and Drasa develop a bond, with Drasa disregarding instructions not to contact Levi across the canyon, seeking his company during her year-long seclusion.

Drasa contrasts with Levi, who harbors a deeper, more ominous emotion beneath his surface. In the movie, Levi remarks, «‘If you bury enough bodies, the cemetery runs out of space,’» which underscores the guilt he carries for his task at the gorge. Teller notes about this, «‘That’s the internalization of it, but eventually, it will surface and manifest in various forms.’

In the depths of this gloom, Levi finds solace with Drasa. Here’s how I might rephrase it: «Levi seemed enveloped in guilt, loneliness, or depravity, but there was a yearning for something more. And yet, Drasa, she was like a beacon of hope, and I could see a glimmer of that in him.» Teller notes that Levi wasn’t just passively receiving this, though. He adds: «Levi had to be open to it, and I really admired that he was willing to do so,» explaining that initially, Levi tried writing poetry to confront his feelings, but it was Drasa who made him feel complete and not meant for solitude.

Drasa is grappling with her own inner turmoil, Taylor-Joy explains. She suggests that if Drasa gets too deeply engrossed in this darkness, it could be extremely challenging for her to emerge from it again. However, scenes such as the one featuring Iggy Pop and the film’s music provided Taylor-Joy with an entry point and enabled her to understand what keeps drawing Drasa towards the brighter aspects of life.

As a fellow music lover, I found her musical preferences to be an incredible window into her soul. We seemed to share similar tastes in music, and listening to the tracks she enjoyed took me back to my own teenage years. Consequently, I compiled various playlists that truly embodied Drasa’s spirit, and surprisingly, many of those songs were included in the movie itself.

Ultimately, Taylor-Joy genuinely believes that Drasa and Levi are «soulmates» and that, even if there wasn’t a literal gorge in between them, «Drasa would’ve broken [Levi] down.» Still, it’s «the absurdity of the setting» that ultimately brings the two star-crossed lovers together amid the horror and madness of The Gorge.
